This environment was part of my Master’s thesis project, titled “Womb Levels: The Process of Developing Organic Environments”. A “Womb Level” is an environment that is fully made of flesh, meat, or any living tissue. It lets the player know that he/she is interacting inside a massive living being, hence the “womb” comparison.
In order to create a more striking “before and after”effect, I chose to apply this design to an environment from an existing game (Valve’s Portal) which is characterized by very clean, sterile-looking levels. I studied the layout and assets within the Source Engine and remade everything to fit and work within the Unreal 3 Engine.
