The Abandoned Pod Village of San Zhi

This scene depicts an actual location in Taipei also known as the “abandoned pod city of San-Zhi”. Many stories circulate about why this futuristic village never came to be: questionable building practices, fatal construction accidents, property disputes, and the most interesting one, the government’s refusal to tear it down since it is rumored to be haunted, and in China it is forbidden to tamper with places where spirits may roam. I chose to build this scene because it tries to deceive with its colorful and playful look and almost toy-like appearance, yet deep down it is a depressing image of abandonment and decay, which gave me the chance to play with some interesting textures.
